Sandler's romantic comedy with Jennifer Aniston, Just Go With It, took in $31 million, according to studio estimates from box office tracking firm Hollywood.com.
Fast on his tail was Bieber, whose concert film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never took second with $30.3 million if statistics hold. Final figures are due Monday.
Sandler's movies often play terribly with critics, terrifically with young men. This was no exception: With It earned recommendations from just 18% of the nation's movie critics, according to the amalgam survey site RottenTomatoes.com
The 16-year-old crooner's close finish at the box office surprised analysts, who weren't convinced Bieber's appeal to 10-year-old girls could match Sandler's big-screen sway.
But Never earned surprisingly strong reviews: Nearly two-thirds of the nation's film critics recommended the movie, according to RottenTomatoes.com. The movie also picked up females not interested in Sandler. A whopping 84% of the Bieber audience was female, and 67% were under 25. All women, however graded the film an A-plus, according to survey site CinemaScore.
Despite getting a thumbs-up from only about half the nation's film's critics, the animated comedy Gnomeo and Juliet proved the enduring strength of cartoons on the big screen. The movie more than doubled projections to take $25.5 million and third place.
The critically maligned historical action film The Eagle was fourth with $8.6 million, meeting the modest end of expectations.
The horror film The Roommate was fifth with $8.4 million, bringing its 10-day total to $26 million.
The four new films weren't enough to end Hollywood's three-month attendance slide, but business was brisk and summer sequels have studios hoping to lure moviegoers back.
"Crowds will finally start coming back to the multiplexes," says Giteesh Pandya of BoxOfficeGuru.com.
