Fighting in under 140 characters is definitely an art. You have to carefully craft your insults by cut down on the big, intimidating words (in favor of the 4-letter variety, of course), wait for comebacks to pop up, deal with nosy retweeters, and that's just the beginning. There's plenty of entertaining stuff on the interwebs, but it's hard to beat a Twitter war. Check out the best fighting words here:
1. Rihanna Vs. Ciara
These sexy singers went at it online in February 2011, after Ciara thought Rihanna blew her off at a party. Ciara got on TV and blasted RiRi, then took to Twitter: "Trust me Rhianna you don't wanna see me on or off the stage," she wrote. Rihanna replied with a barb about Ciara's less-than-epic new album. "U gangsta huh? Haaa," she wrote. "Good luck booking that stage u speak of." After a few heated tweets, the girls had a change of heart. "Ciara baby, I love u girl! U hurt my feelings real bad on TV! I'm heartbroken! That's y I retaliated this way! So sorry!" she wrote. Ciara replied: "Pure comedy. Rhi you know its always been love since day 1! Doing shows/everything. You threw me off at that party! Apology accepted. Lets chat in person."
2. Miley Cyrus vs. Justin Gaston
Back in 2009, before Miley Cyrus got all her tattoos and such, she had a BF named Justin Gaston. Then they broke up. Then they got emo on Twitter. Justin started it, writing: "People mistake stupidity for bravery way too easily." Miley retorted: "Yeah. I love when people mistake bravery with writing a few stupid tweets trying to make it seem like they don't care. You're afraid to love." The dramatic tweets continued for a while, then they both found better uses of their time and emotions.
3. George Lopez vs. Kirstie Alley
George Lopez made some fat jokes about Kirstie Alley's performance on Dancing with the Stars in March and they didn't go over well. "Before the show, she went to the market and then she had roast beef," he said on his show, alluding to the nursery rhyme.
He apologized a bit later on his blog, but the war had already started. "I don't need or want ur apology," she tweeted. Then she took a jab at the fact that his ex-wife donated a kidney to him years ago: "I want your kidney dude..on behalf of ur X and all the women uv insulted...give it back," she wrote. George ended the war by sending flowers: "In fairness.. Mr. Lopez sent me a HUGE Slew of flowers today... I formally accept your flowers and your regards...heres yur kidney back..;)" she wrote.
4. 50 Cent vs. Ja Rule
50 Cent and Ja Rule have gotten in some physical altercations in the past, and now they keep the jabs online. Fiddy tweeted Ja in December 2010 after he was sentenced to 2 years in prison for tax evasion, and Mr. Rule wasn't in the mood. "I don't wish jail on nobody stay strong you lil punk," Mr. Cent tweeted. Ja shot back. Things cooled off until Ja started up again in March: "This n---- @50cent talking can somebody tell this clown he aint HOT no more lol," tweeted later. "He got 3 mil followers and his last album barely went gold gtfoh @50cent." he wrote. Ja Rule added: "This Curtis fellow is a real clown clothing line dead sneakers dead album sales been dead and ya'll let him talk like he's poppin @50cent. I wouldn't expect anything different from a ho a-- n---- like @50Cent."
5. Courtney Love vs. Lily Allen
Courtney Love and Lily Allen do not like each other and that is the understatement of the year. These gals fight over anything and everything on Twitter. For example: Lily tweeted an unflattering pic of Courtney in 2010, who wrote back with her claws out. "oh @lilyroseallen tweeted that pic? thats just baby brat nonsense we are NOT having a" FUED" WOULDNT DEIGN TO post a pic of her thighs." She went off for about 10 tweets, writing things like: "i reserve my bile ( dont worry shell slag me off cos we got into a BIG fight) for someone who NOONE i know likes calls herself relevant" Lily eventually broke down and responded: "I would never fight with her, as a rule I don't pick on crazy old ladies."
6. Christine Teigen vs. Avril Lavigne
Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Christine Teigen is super sarcastic and feisty on Twitter. For example, she wrote in April 2011: "Watching an avril lavigne interview. The second most painful thing I have watched today after 'the goods.'" Then she added: "If u told me I could have 1 kid, but it would be exactly like avril, I would choose to have a barren, sterile existence that ends when I die." Avril didn't even bother fighting back. But, when Teigen insulted Jay Moher's newborn son's name (it's Meredith), the actor tweeted up. "@chrissyteigen Why are you even NEAR me? Take your skank ass somewhere where guys like six's in bikinis. Matt Leinert wouldn't sleep w you." Burn.
7. M.I.A vs. Lynn Hirschberg
Singer M.I.A. let a New York Times Magazine writer named Lynn Hirschberg have it after the journalist's harsh cover story claimed the singer was pretty much a poser in May 2010. M.I.A got "revenge" by posting the writer's phone number online, along with: "CALL ME IF YOU WANNA TALK TO ME ABOUT THE N Y T TRUTH ISSUE, ill b taking calls all day bitches ;)" Hirschberg, who immediately had a full voicemail box, wrote back: “I don't think vengefully posting a writer's cell on Twitter is gangsta or even ouch. It's a childish & weak retort.”
8. Sarah Shahi vs. Paris Hilton
Fairly Legal star Sarah Shahi had a one-sided spat over Paris Hilton's driving abilities in April 2011. She wrote about the blonde starlet: "Paris Hilton—worst driver ever. Almost hit me, then ran a stop sign. What if there was a kid around that corner, you dumb b**ch."
Paris didn't comment, probably because she was busy filming her new reality show, playing with her pets, or generally not caring at all what anyone thinks of her, or her driving.
9. Kelly Osbourne vs. Tila Tequila
Back in January 2010, Kelly and Tila had a spat on Twitter that was filled with ridiculous, immature musings. Kelly wrote: "I equate Tila to a fart. She is disgusting, stinks, is publicly embarrassing but kind of funny...No matter what you try and come back with the tampon says it all.” Tila fought back: "is that the BEST u got? I'm TRASH and my tampon??? LMAO B---- PLEASE! AT LEAST MY TAMPON IS EXTRA SMALL AND YOU HAVE TO WEAR DEPENDS DIAPERS." Things got even uglier from there...
10. Lil Kim vs. Keyshia Cole
Lil Kim loves her a Twitter fight! Just a few weeks ago she called Nick Minaj a "coward lame ass b***" online and now she's in a spat with Keyshia Cole.Keyshia kinda started it though. She wrote: "N while we're addressing everything, Lil Kim and I a r not "friends" I take that term very seriously. We made wonderful music. That is it." Then, Lil Kim fought back in rapid succession: "U got that right. We are not friends. The same way U take friendship seriously i take loyalty serious." Followed by: "The whole world has seen me extend my hand to u over and over again." And that's just the beginning.
11. Corey Bohan vs. Audrina Patridge
These two used to tweet sweet nothings to each other...until they broke up March 2011. Then Corey unleashed on his ex, allegedly. "Time 2 pick up the pieces & stop being so sad! Some woman will always be empty & rotten from the inside out. U can't love a heartless woman," he wrote about an unnamed gal who we can only assume was Audrina."A girl that's told yes by everyone surrounding them grows up to be a heartless closed off insecure individual. It's quite sad," he continued the next night. Audrina stayed mum, making this was a very on-sided feud. Now they're reportedly back together!
12. LeAnn Rimes vs. Brandi Glanville
No one was very surprised when LeAnn Rimes and Brandi Glanville exchanged choice words on Twitter -- the country star basically stole (and recently married) her husband Eddie Cibrian after all. They were at each other online and in the media for over a year, and often traded jabs over things like LeAnn trying to parent Brandi's kids. "I told Eddie to please tell you that I think it is highly inappropriate for you to sing in my sons class on Friday. Boundries!!" Brandi tweeted in February 2011. After some serious feuding, the gals declared a truce just months ago. "As a collective unit, Brandi and I would like all negativity to cease toward one another. We have communicated and have a direct understanding that we are ONLY ourselves on Twitter and have no other accounts that try to destroy one another. Please for our families' sake stop the hate now and let us live OUR lives. We don't need opinions or outside help in order for that to happen. Thanks, LeAnn and Brandi."
