'Book of Mormon' Musical About More Than 'Mormon Bashing'

Photobucket

The Book of Mormon creators Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez have opened up about their new Broadway musical, saying the production's main purpose is not to shock and offend.

"We wanted to make this not just cynical and Mormon bashing, but hopeful and happy, because to me that’s what musicals are about," Parker told the New York Times, adding that he’s a fan of Wicked and Jersey Boys.

The story centers around two very different Mormon missionaries who journey to Urganda, where dire conditions force them to question their faith. Parker’s co-director Casey Nicholaw described the tone as "wrong in a good way."

Although Parker and his co-creators made it clear that they don’t believe in Mormonism -- Lopez, who co-wrote Avenue Q, calls the actual Book of Mormon "Bible fan fiction" -- they said they were drawn to the religion out of curiosity.

Stone said he used to wonder about his Mormon neighbors, "Do goofy stories make people nice? What if, in their goofiness, these stories somehow inspire that in the right way. Is that a social good?"

As for the consequences of addressing race and religion on Broadway with the same politically incorrect bluntness that made South Park popular, Parker said he and Stone, who have worked together for 20 years, are "just not scared."

"We’re just reckless," he admitted.

The Book of Mormon opens at the Eugene O’Neill Theater on March 24.

'Unknown' Leads Friday Box Office

Thriller bags $6.7 million while 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never' tumbles to sixth place.

Asking what movie kicked off President's Day weekend by winning the Friday night box office is like the start of a bad Abbott and Costello routine: It's "Unknown."

Despite middling reviews, the Liam Neeson starrer about a man who awakens after a car accident to discover the life he thought he had has been taken away, topped all comers with $6.7 million on Friday from 3,043 screens.

Expected to end at somewhere over $25 million for the four-day weekend, "Unknown" continues Neeson's recent domination of the February box office. The secretly badass star wowed audiences two years ago in "Taken," which, after opening in February 2008, ended its run with $226 million worldwide.

"I Am Number Four," meanwhile, will have to settle for being number two. On Friday, the teen-targeted alien picture finished in second place with $6.2 million. The latest from director D.J. Caruso, and star Alex Pettyfer, "I Am Number Four" could still win the weekend with a strong Saturday bounce.

Last week's winner, the Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston starring "Just Go With It," came in third place with $5.2 million.

Rounding out the top five, new release "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son" and holdover "Gnomeo and Juliet" earned $4.8 million and $4.3 million, respectively.

Which means America may have finally found a cure for Bieber Fever, as the doe-eyed one's 3-D concert pic, "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never," toppled all the way from second to sixth place, earning just $3.8 million on Friday.

Among Oscar hopefuls, "The King's Speech" (seventh place) continued its impressive run. The presumptive favorite at the Academy Awards will pass $100 million domestically this weekend.

Adrienne Curry Attends R2-D2 Wedding

Woman Marries R2-D2 In Official Ceremony

This has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever written about, but I just couldn’t resist. I know that sometimes people do things just to get attention, but c’mon girl, did you have to do this?

I knew before today that @bonniegrrl was a big time geek. After all, she is a writer for Starwars.com. However, geek or not, marrying R2-D2 was just over the edge in my opinion.

Girl, I can relate. I know that many humanoid boys don’t understand a geek girl’s ways, but don’t give up hope. Turning to a droid is not the answer. However, I have to admit, in droid standards, at least you chose the best one to marry. I’ve always had a little crush on R2-D2 myself.

I guess in the end, what you wrote in this article is true, “Sometimes a girl just has to follow her heart no matter where it may lead.” I wish you and R2-D2 a lifetime of happiness, joy and Wookie roars together. You can check out the couple’s complete wedding album here. If you would like to see a video of the ceremony, you can go here.

I now pronounce you droid and wife.

You may kiss the droid!

Adrienne Curry, in a shockingly skintight outfit, looks on as the couple embraces.
