A month after his shocking death, the Ramsey County, Minnesota, medical examiner's office has reported that indie rapper Mike "Eyedea" Larsen died of a drug overdose.
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the cause of death for St. Paul native Larsen was "opiate toxicity," with no specific drugs mentioned as contributing factors. The overdose was ruled accidental.
The day after her son's death, Larsen's mother, Kathy Averill, said Eyedea did not suffer from any addictions.
Eyedea, half of the popular underground hip-hop duo Eyedea & Abilities, was remembered at a public service in St. Paul on October 28 that was attended by more than 2,000 people. A sold-out musical tribute to the rapper at Minneapolis' First Avenue club took place November 9, which would have been Eyedea's 29th birthday. Among the friends who performed at the show were fellow Twin Cities MCs Slug and Carnage and longtime collaborator Kristoff Krane, Aesop Rock, Doseone, DJ Abilities and former Moldy Peaches member Kimya Dawson.
The Minneapolis City Pages reported that the show was full of emotional tributes, including a touching one from Alexei and Channy Moon Casselle of the group Roma di Luna. They performed a duet of Bob Dylan's "He Was a Friend of Mine," and before leaving the stage, Alexei "cleared his throat and spoke into the microphone, fighting back tears. 'The last time I saw Mikey, we were working on a new song together. At one point, he sat down on the couch, picked up a guitar, and started playing this song,' " Alexei said.
The couple then played a cover of the Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize?" that brought tears to more than a few eyes in the crowd. "It was one of the saddest, most beautiful moments I've ever witnessed at a live show," wrote the reviewer.
